Best Tasting Fish

Best Tasting Fish in Charleston

  1. Mahi-Mahi. This type of fish is sometimes called the “dolphin fish.” It tastes great in a dip or when grilled. To catch a Mahi-Mahi, you’re going to need to look in deeper waters to find some. They tend to grow very large and are rarely seen inland. Because of their size, you will need a rod and reel specifically designed for deep-sea fishing.
  2. Flounder is widely-regarded as one of the tastiest fish in the sea. You can grill it, bake it, fry it, or even stuff it. No matter what, this fish is a must-try for anyone living in the coastal city of Charleston. Flounder hang out close to the ocean floor, so you should look for them near bridge piles, docks, or reefs. If you’re trying to catch a Flounder, the best thing you can do is be patient. Flounder feed slowly, so wait about 30 seconds after you feel a small tug (45 if it’s a big tug) before you set your hook.
  3. Red Drum. Red Drums are especially tasty when grilled, but they can also make a great po’boy. To catch a Red Drum, bait your hook with shrimp or crab. These fish tend to live in shallower water, so you can even fish for Red Drums on a dock or pier. However, it would be a good idea to use spider weights if that is where you chose to fish.
  4. Red snapper. Red snappers are also delicious fish that, like the Mahi-Mahi, tend to live in deeper water. Follow the same tips for catching Mahi-Mahi to catch a Red Snapper. These type of fish are easiest to catch with live sardine or cigar minnow bait on a 4/0 hook.
  5. Yellowfin tuna. These fish are large and hard to catch, but if you do, it’s worth it. They are great as a steak, but big and fierce fighters. You’ll find these fish in deeper water, probably about 10 miles from the shore. Your best chance to catch a Yellowfin Tuna would be in the late afternoon because the lower lighting is typically when Yellowfin Tuna are easiest to catch.
